June 5th 2008, Posted in NewsWelcome to MyLocal.co.za. This is the first post of many, and I just want to introduce you to what MyLocal.co.za is all about. The idea for this site came from the lack of access to international services and sites. This is mainly due to the exhorborant prices for international access in South Africa. Not only that, international speeds are slow, due to poor international links and the distance data must travel to reach sites hosted in other parts of the world.
I started playing with the idea of providing a way for local users to get the best of both worlds: International Services, but hosted Locally. For a starter, I've created a Google Search, which utilises the Google Ajax Search API. No international access is required (Except if you click on international sites in the search results), and speeds are quicker due to a South African host. This is a great way to still be able to search google for sites even when you are capped internationally. I will post a more detailed blog on the topic.
I'm always looking to expand and bring more services locally. So, everyone is more than welcome to drop me an email if you have an idea. I will be looking to expand on the Google search with Images, News and Blog searching, at a later stage.
